The new  Epson Stylus Photo PX650, is aimed at  the home photo enthusiast  , although it can  also be used  as a  regular  text  printer as well. 

This machine is a strange combination of styling with a more innovative design. The paper path is the standard Epson format  with a 120-sheet feed tray at the rear delivering paper to the six-colour print heads. The Epson stylus photo PX650 takes the T0801 TO T0806 range of cartridges.  

The flatbed scanner is nicely integrated into the top of the machine. The full-width control panel hinges up from the front and can be set at eight different angles to suit your use . 

 A now standard  63mm LCD display sits close to the centre of the control panel, with a square of nine navigation buttons to its right. Finally , there are two buttons to start and stop scan and copy jobs. 

Below the control panel, in a separate  row  above the output tray, are sockets for SD, MemoryStick, xD and CompactFlash memory cards,  and  a PictBridge socket which doubles up for USB drives.  The  machine has a large grey lever set to the left of the output tray and lowers to the horizontal so you can  push  in a CD/DVD carrier,  you can also use mini cd’s with this as well  .

On the back of the machine there is the standard usb, but no ethernet or wireless connection at all, which seems a little strange in this day and age .

Here we go with the silly  quoted print speed again. As per usual quoted speeds are in draft mode, but It’s hard to believe there are many customers who buy a six-colour photo all-in-one and then  only  use it to print text in draft mode. In normal print mode, we managed a top black text speed of just  under 5 pages per munute  , Epson claim a top draft mode speed of 37ppm. When it came to colour prints, which Epson quotes at 38ppm, we managed just  under 4  pages per minute. 

Switching to photo print, 15 x 10cm photos printed in times as quick as just over 30 seconds, depending on the source (i.i memory card, pictbridge etc), which is very quick. We checked print quality with the  PC and a SD card, PictBridge camera and USB and were impressed by the clarity of the images and the natural colours produced, although they were a little dark, but a little tinkering soon  sorted  that, it’s a shame  photographs  may need tinkering really as the extra light magenta & light cyan ink cartridges that are used in this printer compared to 4 headed machines should mean images should be closer to the original without tinkering. 

Black text print is okay , though not as densely black as some and suffers here and there from a little ink spread, so characters can have a slight fuzz to them. Solid colours are generally well reproduced.

A  color  photocopy was a bit of a disapointment and showed quite a bit of color  displacement, with most shades noticeably lighter than the originals. This is strange for an Epson printer and perhaps could be put down to a slightly dodgy machine.

Epson ink cartridges, as mentioned above are the T0801 T0806. But a high yield set of inks T0791 to T0796 are also available.

Verdict 

The Epson Stylus Photo PX650 represents good value for money for a machine offering six-colour print and useful extras such as PictBridge/USB print and CD/DVD label printing. However, this is fine for photo printing, but it is slow if you wanted to use this printer in an office environment.

You can’t control all situations, but you can control your reaction and determine how much impact an event will have on your day and your life.

Learn to Respond instead of React. When you respond, you think first, apraise the situation, and then act. The chance of success instantly increases then. Reacting is the instinctual Flight or Fight response which mostly produces rather archaic results.

Take a few moments to read this story about a little bird and imagine your life if you were this little bird.

Once an eagle that made its nest at the top of a tall bridge. The bird laid 3 eggs that all hatched to healthy chirping baby birds. As time went by, one of the hatchlings was ready to make its first flight.

It stood out at the edge of its nest, flapped its wings and took a leap of faith… to learn how to fly.

Unfortunately for that poor hatchling, it never had its glorious flight into the sunset. Maybe the wind was too strong on that day. Who knew the reason why it did not fly successfully.

It couldn’t stop itself from spiraling downwards towards the fast approaching concrete road far below its nest. The little bird fell to the ground and was run over by a car.

Thus, ends a life so full of promise…

Do you see how closely the story of the little bird resembles real life?

That little bird had only ONE chance to learn how to fly. Make or break, do or die. Can you imagine if you were given only one chance in life? That would be scary.

On the other hand, we are luckier as life always throws many opportunities our way. Although we failed, in general, our consequence is not death or anything as critical as that . At the same time, it always amazes me how many people take those opportunities for granted thinking that there will always be a next time.
